The office of Angela Merkel has been sealed off due to a suspicious package.
Ms Merkel remains in the building in downtown Berlin, which has not been evacuated.
Photographs that emerged on social media show postal crates in the sectioned off area outside the main entrance.
Federal police spokesperson Thorsten Peters confirmed that they are ‘investigating a suspicious package’, and that the main entrance to the chancellery is closed off.
The ‘suspicious package’ was discovered during a routine security check at the entrance of the Chancellery.
The Chancellery in Berlin is one of the largest government headquarters in the world, and although it has a semi-official ‘Chancellor apartment’, Ms Merkel lives in a private apartmentĀ at a separate location.
The mail box was later discovered to be harmless, and police have given the all-clear.
