Austria has announced that they will pay migrants $500 each to go back to their homeland.

This is an attempt to encourage 50,000 migrants to leave Austria by 2019.

The plans were announced by the country’s foreign ministry, defence ministry and interior ministry.

The interior minister, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, has said that Austria has one of the highest deportation levels within Europe.

In 2015, Austria deported a total of 8,365 migrants but will increase the number to 12,500 in 2015.

They also announced they would be placing adverts in migrant-origin countries and on social media encouraging migrants to stay in their home countries.

Minister Hans Peter Doskozil has suggested stationing soldiers on the borders and even training citizens to patrol them.

He released a statement saying: “We now need to prepare as soon as possible. Time is running out.”

This comes just a few days after Finland announced they will deport 20,000 asylum seekers.

In October, 218,394 migrants reached Europe by sea, the UN revealed, which is as many as the total number of arrivals in 2014.
