A massive natural gas leak in Los Angeles could bring crippling blackouts to Southern California, according to the Associated Press.

Energy officials believe Southern California could have 2-weeks of blackouts this summer due to the Aliso Canyon gas leak, which has been ongoing for months.

“We do not anticipate rolling blackouts, we do anticipate scheduled outages.” Robert Weisenmiller, chair of the California Energy Commission told KPCC.

The leak started on October 23, 2015. An estimated 1,000,000 barrels per day was released from a well within the Aliso Canyon’s underground storage facility in the Santa Susana Mountains near Porter Ranch, Los Angeles.

On January 6, 2016, Governor Jerry Brown issued a state of emergency.

An estimated 97,100 tonnes of methane and 7,300 tonnes of ethane was released into the atmosphere, making it the worst natural gas leak in U.S. history in terms of its environmental impact.
