SANDWICH, Mass. — Cape & Island’s District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Sandwich Police Chief Peter Wack announced today that they are investigating an unattended death that occurred at Camp Burgess in Sandwich yesterday.

On Wednesday morning, Sandwich Police and Fire were called to the camp when 18-year-old Neal J. Tompkins who was a camp counselor was found unresponsive in his bunk.

Preliminary investigations suggest no signs of foul play. The matter remains under investigation pending the autopsy report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

In a statement, the camp said, “We feel it would be best to allow campers to stay at camp through the week where they have access to grief counselors and the support of the camp community to grieve and share and offer some closure.”

No further details were available.

Sandwich is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,675 at the 2010 census. The Town Hall is located right next to the Dexter Grist Mill, in the historic district of town.
