UPDATE FROM NY STATE POLICE ON MANHUNT FOR PRISON ESCAPEES

From the New York State Police: The State Police in Steuben County are currently following up leads of a possible sighting of the 2 escaped inmates from the Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY.

On the afternoon of June 20, a witness spotted two men along a railroad line that runs along Route 20 in the Town of Friendship.

State Police, U.S. Marshals, officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, State Parks Police, Allegany County Sheriff’s Department and other local law enforcement are currently searching an area along I-86 and Route 20 in the Town of Friendship. Aviation, canine and special operation teams are assisting in the search.

While this is an unconfirmed sighting, the State Police is asking residents who live in this area along the New York-Pennsylvania border to be on alert. If these men are spotted, please call 911 immediately. Do not approach, as both are considered to be very dangerous.

David Sweat and Richard Matt escaped June 6th and are still on the run. Troopers and Investigators are searching the area of a construction site in the Town of Erwin.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the State Police.

The public should continue to remain vigilant and not hesitate to report any suspicious activity. This includes any sign of a trespass, burglary or vehicle larceny.
