LOS ANGELES — A Bellflower man was sentenced today for fatally shooting his wife in front of their family on Christmas Day two years ago.

Santiago Palacios Salgado, 58, was sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Cowell to 40 years to life in prison.

On Dec. 25, 2017, Salgado went to a home in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue in Bellflower, displayed a handgun and fatally shot his estranged wife, Gabriela Romero-Garcia, 41. Children were present during the murder.

Salgado then shot himself in the abdomen in an apparent suicide attempt–he survived.

In August, Salgado pleaded no contest to one felony count of second-degree murder.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
