A 35-car pileup on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire resulted in vehicles strewn all across the highway. One semi tractor-trailer ended up in flames.

Twelve people were injured as result of the accidents, which were likely due to brief downpours of snow and icy road conditions faced by drivers.

The crash was reported at around 10 a.m. on I-93 North in Ashland, according to New Hampshire’s Department of Transportation.

Despite initial reports that as many as 50 to 100 cars were involved, State Police report that 35 vehicles were involved in two separate pileups. One of these crashes involved a semi that caught aflame after a car went underneath it.

“[We] came out of this fog of snow, and it was right there, so we just slammed right into it and then people started hitting us,” said Kristyn Reed, who was driving next to the crash as it occurred. “We had to climb over other cars to get away, because people kept saying ‘That car’s going to blow.'”

Speare Memorial Hospital of Plymouth said it treated nine patients from the incident, but could not comment on the extent of the patients’ injuries. One of the patients was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover and two patients other patients are still at the hospital in Plymouth. The six others were treated and released.

None of the patients’ injuries are said to be life-threatening.

The interstate reopened at about 1 p.m. after having been close for just under three hours. It was closed north of Exit 24 with traffic detoured off Exit 22.
