TENNESSEE — One person was fatally shot inside the Opry Mills shopping mall in Nashville Thursday–police originally indicated more victims.

The victim has been identified as Demarco Churchwell, 22, of Nashville.

Police say 911 calls came in around 2:30 p.m. local time reporting an active shooter.

Members of the Tennessee Highway Patrol were in the Bass Pro Shop parking lot performing motorcycle training at the time of the shooting. Troopers immediately responded to assist the Nashville Police Department by setting up a perimeter.

Police say the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Justin Golson, fled the mall after the shooting and walked to a ticket counter at the Opry concert venue. Golson placed his gun on the counter and told staff he ‘did not want any trouble,’ and to call 911.

A retired police officer who was nearby took possession of the weapon until officers arrived and detained Golson.

Police later said the shooting was the result of a ‘dispute.’

Officers armed with rifles were sweeping the building as a precaution.

The nearby Opryland hotel was placed on lockdown.
