Man Charged with Shooting Toddler Arrested by U.S. Marshals

Durham, NC – On February 19, 2016, at approximately 3:30 pm, Marion Lacount Laney, 26, was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force (JFTF) and the Durham Police Department.

On February 19, 2016, warrants were issued for Laney by the Durham Police Department for following charges: one count of discharging a firearm into occupied property inflicting serious injury, one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of injury to property and one count of discharging a firearm within the city limits. Mr. Laney is a validated gang member.

On February 16, 2016 at around 3:00 pm, officers were dispatched to a shooting call on Great Bend Drive. When officers arrived on the scene, they found an eighteen month old boy had been shot inside the residence. The child was immediately taken to the hospital for medical treatment and released. Officers were told that numerous shots were fired by the occupants of a dark colored sedan.

Information was developed that led the JFTF to an address of 912 Northcreek Drive in Durham, North Carolina. Laney was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Durham Police Substation One for processing. He has been placed in Durham County Jail under a $1.5 million bond.
