Man Shot By Agent in Downtown El Paso Had Just Committed Murder, Police Say

EL PASO, TEXAS — A man shot and killed by a United States Border Patrol Agent had just committed a murder and was attempting to car jack another victim at gun point, police said.

Central Patrol Officers responded to the call at around 5:54pm on Thursday, February 4, 2016 in the 100 block of South Santa Fe when witnesses reported a shooting that had just occurred. While Officers were responding, on duty Border Patrol agents were in the area and became aware of the shooting. The Agents observed the suspect run from the scene and gave chase. Upon reaching the intersection of Overland and El Paso the Agents observed the suspect holding the driver of a vehicle at gun point and attempting to car jack him.

The suspect refused to put down his weapon and was ultimately shot by the Agents. The victim who was shot, as well as the suspect, were transported to University Medical Center for treatment however both men died as a result of the gunshot wounds they sustained. At this time investigators believe the original motive behind the shooting that killed the victim was a robbery.

This case is currently being investigated by the El Paso Police Department, the Texas Rangers, United States Border Patrol, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending positive identification as well as notification of their next-of-kin.
