Washington College in Maryland has closed its campus until further notice as police and FBI continue to search for an armed student who is missing.

The campus urged students to shelter in place and staff not to come into work after the parents of Jacob Marberger, 19, said he had returned to his Pennsylvania home to retrieve a gun on Monday morning.

Officials had decided to reopen the campus in Chestertown on Monday evening, but the school was then evacuated on Tuesday.

A statement on the school’s website on Tuesday said classes are cancelled and the campus will remain closed until further notice.

It said: ‘In the interest of caution and due to new information received from law enforcement at 9.15 this morning, we have decided to cancel classes.

‘We did not have this information yesterday evening when the decision to reopen campus was made.’

It added: ‘We have not had any direct threats against campus or any members of our community, but in the interest of caution we feel closing campus until the situation changes is the best course of action.’

According to the Washington Post, authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Marberger for dangerous weapon on school property, handgun on a person, possession of a firearm by a minor and illegal possession of ammunition.
