NEW YORK – Michael Cohen, former lawyer and longtime fixer for U.S. President Donald Trump, should receive a lengthly prison sentence for violating campaign finance laws by arranging secret payoffs to dual women who claimed to have sex with Mr. Trump, federal prosecutors wrote to a judge in Manhattan. Read the Full Filing: PDF File The filing by prosecutors say Cohen “committed four distinct federal crimes over a period of several years”, adding that he was motivated to do so “by personal greed”, using “his power and influence for deceptive ends”. The document recommends that the longtime Trump fixer turned White House enemy should not avoid jail time “based on his rose-colored view of the seriousness of the crimes” and recommends a “substantial term of imprisonment”. The memo appears to indicate that Cohen committed the 2016 campaign finance violations at the “direction’ of the U.S. president, then the Republican Party candidate. Cohen is one of several Trump associates under investigated as part of a probe into alleged Russian collusion with the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election in the United States. Legal and political analysts were quick to rip into Cohen, Trump and others included in the scope of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, a probe that Cohen is cooperating with to the distaste of former boss Trump. Seth Abramson, a legal analyst and Trump critic who recently published a book detailing the Russia probe called Proof of Collusion, said “it’s all bad. It’s all bad. For Trump” on Twitter, posting images of the court filing. U.S. President Donald Trump, who has attacked Cohen repeatedly since he started cooperating with the Mueller probe, responded by saying the filing “totally clears the President. Thank you!”
