Michigan School Student Killed In Car Crash While Trying To Escape From Police

A 17-year-old student has died after his car ploughed into a tree as he attempted to escape from police investigating complaints of vandalism.

The boy, who was a student at Chelsea High School in Michigan died at the scene of the accident.

Chelsea Police Department confirmed that the youth sped off as soon as officers showed up and tried to perform a traffic stop.

Police gave chase in the town which is about 50 miles west of Detroit.

As the youngster attempted to turn at a junction, he lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.

Emergency services reached the crash scene soon after the impact but the boy, who has not yet been named died.

Local resident Thomas Owens told MLive.com that he believed the car hit several trees before stopping near his home.

He said he was woken up by the noise of the emergency services arriving, but by the time he got near the car, the fire department had draped a blanket over the side of the vehicle.

He said at that stage he thought the incident was fatal.
