The Michigan State Police are investigating an incident that occurred around 2:30 a.m. last Thursday, in which two Border Patrol agents were shot at on Drummond Island in Chippewa County, Mich.
The Border Patrol agents were participating in the search for Aaron Andrew Furness, 38, from Woodbridge, Va., who was reported missing the previous day, Sept. 23.
Furness was currently serving in the U.S. military, but has Michigan connections and was believed to be in the area.
While searching for Furness, the Border Patrol agents discovered foot prints and tracked them to a remote cabin where they were fired upon.
The agents returned fire from their service-issued weapons while taking cover.
The subject (now positively identified as Furness) retreated into the cabin, and the MSP Emergency Support (ES) Team was activated to assist with the barricaded gunman situation.
Around 11 a.m., following unsuccessful attempts to contact the Furness, the ES Team made entry into the cabin where they located Furness deceased.
An autopsy is being conducted today to determine the cause of death but investigators believe the wound was self-inflicted.
