Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced on Wednesday that police chief Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez, who attempted suicide on a highway after an argument with his wife on Sunday night, offered his resignation before shooting himself.

Levine Cava disclosed that she had a conversation with Director Ramirez around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. During the call, Ramirez informed her about an incident at a hotel in Tampa, acknowledging that he had “made mistakes” and expressing remorse. He also indicated that he was returning to Miami and was willing to resign, stating, “He told me he had made a mistake, that he was prepared to resign.”

While the Mayor didn’t provide further details about their conversation, she did mention an ongoing investigation into the events involving Ramirez on Sunday. As reported earlier, on Monday, it was revealed that Ramirez shot himself in the head on a Florida highway after the argument with his wife.

He underwent surgery on Monday afternoon and is currently in stable condition, according to Miami-Dade police officials.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister commented on Ramirez’s condition, saying, “He probably has a long road ahead, a lot of surgeries, but he is going to survive.”

Mayor Levine Cava confirmed on Wednesday that Ramirez remains in stable condition following the surgery. She stated, “And every day that he is recovering, he is continuing to regain his strength. He’s now alert, awake, and responsive.”

The initial response to the incident occurred on Sunday evening at the Florida Sheriff’s Association’s Summer Conference in Tampa, where officers were called regarding a male pointing a gun at himself. Ramirez informed the responding officers on the 12th floor of the Marriott Westside that he posed no threat to himself or others and was subsequently released at the scene, according to Tampa police.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office characterized the encounter as a domestic dispute between Ramirez and his wife. However, shortly after this incident, Ramirez left the scene and proceeded to shoot himself in the head on I-75, south of Tampa, as confirmed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
