Salmonella Outbreak Affecting Multiple States Linked To Ground Beef: CDC

Federal health officials report that a salmonella contamination in ground beef has affected a minimum of 16 people, with six of them requiring hospitalization. The affected states in the Northeast include New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the common food linked to the outbreak is ground beef.

The investigation has indicated that individuals who recalled their food consumption and purchases reported having consumed 80% lean ground beef from ShopRite stores in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. However, no official recall has been issued yet, and the authorities are continuing their investigation.

“Ground beef is the only common food people reported eating,” the CDC said. “Investigators are working to identify the source of the ground beef sick people ate.”

The actual number of people affected is likely higher than the reported cases, as some individuals may recover without seeking medical attention or getting tested for salmonella poisoning. Additionally, there is a possibility that the outbreak may extend to states beyond those with confirmed illnesses.

Salmonella infection symptoms include fever, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Public health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further spread and ensure the safety of the public.
