NYPD Counterterrorism officers used their department-issued tourniquet to help save a woman after she was involved in a collision on her bicycle. Police Officer Dimitri Coutsouvelis and his partner, Police Officer Thomas Demery, assigned to the Critical Response Command, were on a post near Avenue of Americas and West 47 Street in Manhattan when they saw saw a van driving and dragging a Citibike.

After they approached the van to stop the driver they also observed a woman lying in the road just south of the vehicle. Officers Coutsouvelis and Demery immediately began to render aid to the cyclist who had a belt tied around her leg by a good Samaritan in an attempt to stop bleeding.

Officer Coutsouvelis removed the belt and quickly applied his NYPD issued tourniquet to the 56-year-old woman’s leg that had an open wound spanning from her knee to her upper thigh. EMS responded to the scene and transported the woman to Bellevue Hospital where she is in stable condition.
