A jet has been evacuated in Madrid after a note claiming explosives were placed on a plane were discovered.

The pilot was alerted by crew members of the threat and raised the alarm.

The plane was a Saudi Airlines flight to Riyadh from Madrid.

All of the 97 passengers were evacuated after a note reading ‘bomb aboard’ which was pinned to a wall with a knife was found.

The Spanish interior minister has said the flight was on the runway and was about to take off before 11am.

The Saudi plane was then diverted to a secure and isolated area of the airport.

Airport officials confirmed that the note was written in English.

The Spanish Civil Guard has now removed the alert after a bomb squad searched the plane.

The Spanish airport operator Aena said the alarm does not affect any other flight in and out of the airport.

Only one of the airport’s runways remains shut down closed with at least two landing runways still in use.
