U.S. officials have claimed that a Somalian plane that made an emergency landing due to an explosion was caused by a bomb.

Shortly after takeoff, an explosion went off on board the Djibouti-bound Daallo Airlines flight.

Reuters reported in all probability the explosion was caused by a bomb planted by one of the Islamist militant groups waging a terrorist campaign in the region for the last decade.

No group has yet taken responsibility for the explosion.

Earlier officials at Somalia’s civil aviation authority said they had found no evidence so far of a criminal act.

Daallo Airlines released a statement saying: ‘Pilots managed to land the aircraft back [Mogadishu airport safely and without any further incident,’

‘All passengers except one disembarked safely.’

A 55-year-old passenger was found in the Baclad area about 19 miles north of Mogadishu.

He is believed to of been sucked out of the aircraft after the explosion.

Two people suffered minor injuries and 74 passengers were evacuated from the plane after it landed safely.

Al Shabaab is the leading suspect in the apparent bombing of a plane.
