Over 100,000 migrants have arrived in Europe since the beginning of the year, according to the IOM.

Over 102,000 migrants landed on Greek islands and 7,500 in Italy throughout 2016.

The figure has been blamed due to the unprecedented amount of migrants who arrived on the Greek islands.

It took until July for the 100,000 mark to be reached during 2015.

The IOM released a statement saying: Over 410 migrants and refugees have also lost their lives during the same period, with the eastern Mediterranean route between Turkey and Greece continuing to be the deadliest, accounting for 321 deaths.’

Greece received the largest number of migrants, with around 102,500.

The spokesperson also noted that over 100,000 had reached Europe despite dangerous sea conditions.

On Monday, 600 Afghan migrants protested on a railway between Macedonia and Greece.

Three migrants climbed over the border fence and were detained.

Macedonia has since introduced tougher border controls in an attempt to stem the migrant influx.

Many countries across Europe have begun to introduce stringent border measures, critics have expressed their concern over their delayed reaction to the crisis.
