WATCH: (Scroll Down For Video) A woman from Illinois has been charged with first-degree murder after she killed her husband with a spiked smoothie, she then attempted to commit suicide.
Julia Gutierrez, aged 53, appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with the killing of her husband, Eduardo Gutierrez.
The Kane County State Attorney’s office said that between January 26th and January 28th, Mrs Gutierrez gave her spouse a smoothie spiked with prescription sedatives.
Mr Gutierrez consumed it and passed away as a result, he was 53 years old.
At 6pm on Thursday, police received a call regarding a welfare check at the Gutierrez’s household.
Officer who responded discovered the body of Eduardo.
His wife was also home and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
It was then discovered she tried taking her own life using the same sedative she used on her husband.
She was then transferred to the Kane County Jail.
If she is convicted of the murder, she could face up to 60 years in prison.
